Abstract

In 2001, a widely distributed email urged people to indicate ‘Jedi’ (from the movie Star Wars) as their religious affiliation on the National Census to be undertaken that year. The email, which may have originated from a prank, stated that if large enough numbers of people declared an affiliation to Jedi, the government would be forced to include it as a religion in future censuses. More than 70,000 Australians and 390,000 Britons heeded the call to action and recorded Jedi as their religion in the 2001 census. While the majority of people claiming affiliation to Jedism probably did so in a spirit of fun and/or rebellion, research suggests there are members of society who take the ‘religion’ quite seriously. The introduction and establishment of new religious beliefs once reliant on migration or trade is now facilitated by a global sharing of ideas through mass media and communications technology.

Using Jediism and the events surrounding the 2001 National Census in Australia, Britain and New Zealand as examples, this paper explores the legality of new religious movements and; the question of whether the study of a religion based on popular culture can provide relevant discourse on late modern religious environments, attitudes, and participation or if it should simply be dismissed as a passing fad. The results of this research will contribute to the body of knowledge relating to changes in religious affiliation in Australia.

Hey all. Dante here. Unfortunately, it seems that Balance of Power is going to be halted until further notice, considering i've torn my ACL (Shouldnt be doing backflips on a bad knee.) and the fact that about three people dropped out of the production.

However, with all this newfound interest in Star Wars and Jedi, i've become quite the avid duelist. And, naturally, i'd like a saber (or apparently a couple of them) to choose from so i may duel with friends, family, and maybe even start a fan film of my own. Multiple sabers would certainly help with fan films, as well as allowing friends to borrow them if they needed a duelling blade.

So i've been coming up with some designs, and i wanted a bit of feedback. I've come up with four designs...well, ok. three designs; four sabers in all. (dear god is this gonna empty my wallet quickly.) I would love to hear what you all think of the designs; what you like about them, where there could be improvement, and maybe a couple of names would help too, considering i'm blanking on blade names these days.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shaelasche/Sabers-1.jpg

The first two are my duel wielding sabers, but can also stand on their own, perhaps as master/padawan blades. The second design is much more sith-inspired. And the third is just to kinda round everything out, with a sort of sage-like consulor saber. Funny thing is, the last one was supposed to be a small, simple design, and ended up being the longest saber of the bunch, and will probably be one of the more difficult ones to build. But yeah, that's enough backstory, tell me what you think!

Discuss :P

Players will wield the Jedi weapon of choice using Nintendo’s motion-sensitive 'Wiimote' controller

A new weapon will soon join Nintendo’s armoury: a lightsabre.

Internet gaming sites across the web today cheered news of a new Star Wars game for the hit Wii console in which players will wield the Jedi weapon of choice using Nintendo’s motion sensitive “Wiimote” controller.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, developed by LucasArts, will also be released early next year on Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Nintendo’s handheld DS machine and Sony’s PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable.

But it is the Wii version that is causing the biggest buzz – literally, possibly, since the Wii Remote is equipped with a loudspeaker.

Jim Ward, President of LucasArts, said: "The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console's motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life.

"We've worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force."

Last month the Wii became the fastest-selling video games console in British history after one million of the machines were sold 38 weeks after the device made its high street debut.

The Wii achieved the one million landmark in a shorter time than the Sony PlayStation 2, which, after a difficult launch in 2000, went on to become the world's most successful console so far, selling more than 115 million units worldwide.

The Wii, designed to attract "non-core" gamers, is outselling both the struggling PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 by at least two-to-one.

The Force Unleashed “casts players as Darth Vader's ‘Secret Apprentice’ and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy,” the publisher said.

The game's story is set during “the largely unexplored era” between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi – “and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny”.

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that its first-quarter net profits soared more than fivefold, further vindicating the Japanese group's declared policy of making video games for "people who don't like video games".

The company also sharply raised its full-year forecasts on soaring sales of the Wii and the continued success of its DS handheld machine.

Nintendo posted net earnings of ¥80.25 billion (£326 million) in the three months to June, traditionally a quiet quarter for video games sales, up from ¥15.55 billion a year earlier. Revenue was up 160 per cent to ¥340.44 billion as the company sold 3.4 million Wii consoles and 7 million DS machines worldwide over the three months. The Wii has now sold more than 9 million units worldwide since its launch last autumn.

Nintendo added that it now plans to ship 16.5 million Wii consoles by March 31, 2008, up from 14 million previously. Targets for shipments of Wii software were lifted to 72 million units, from 55 million. DS shipments were lifted to 26 million, from 22 million.

August 27, 2007 — When the space shuttle Discovery launches the STS-120 crew in October, the force will be with them.

Stowed on-board the orbiter, in addition to a new module for the international space station, will be the original prop lightsaber used by actor Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the 1977 film "Star Wars". The laser-like Jedi weapon is being flown to the orbiting outpost and back in honor of the 30th anniversary of director George Lucas' franchise.

Before it can make its trip to orbit though, the lightsaber will first fly to Houston, Texas, home of NASA's Johnson Space Center, by way of Southwest Airlines and a Star Wars-studded send off from Oakland International Airport in California on Tuesday.

Chewbacca, the towering Wookiee best known from the film as Han Solo's co-pilot on the Millennium Falcon, will officially hand the lightsaber over to officials from Space Center Houston during a ceremony at the airport. Joining "Chewie" will be other characters from the six-part sci-fi classic, including Boba and Jango Fett and together they help push back the airplane on the tarmac.

Once on the ground in Houston, the flight will be greeted by a troop of Stormtroopers and other Star Wars notables including the droid R2-D2, who will deliver the lightsaber to a waiting line of Hummers outside the baggage claim of the William P. Hobby Airport. Accompanied by a police escort, the soon-to-be real space artifact will be driven to Space Center Houston to be exhibited inside a vault that currently displays moon rocks.

Space Center Houston, as the official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, plans to publicly display the lightsaber through Labor Day, after which it will be prepared for its launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The lightsaber is scheduled to depart California at 10:40 a.m. PDT and arrive in Texas at 4:20 p.m. CDT according to a release jointly issued Monday by Southwest Airlines, Space Center Houston and Lucasfilm.

STS-120, targeted for launch on October 23, will be led by commander Pam Melroy and pilot George Zamka. The seven-person crew is completed by mission specialists Scott Parazynski, Doug Wheelock, Stephanie Wilson and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli, as well as space station Expedition 16 flight engineer Dan Tani. Besides the lightsaber, their primary cargo is the station's second Italian-built U.S. multi-port node named Harmony.

Anakin Skywalker, the Star Wars character who became Darth Vader, had borderline personality disorder, psychiatrists report.

The news comes not from a galaxy far, far away, but from San Diego, where the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is holding its 160th annual meeting.

Experts from the psychiatric department at France's University Hospital of Toulouse told the APA's annual meeting that Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader could "clearly" be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a serious mental illness marked by instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior, according to background information on the Web site of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

The French psychiatrists — who included Laurent Schmitt, M.D. — based their diagnosis on original Star Wars film scripts.

Schmitt's team describes Skywalker's symptoms, including problems with controlling anger and impulsivity, temporary stress-related paranoia, "frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment (when trying to save his wife at all costs), and a pattern of unstable and intense personal relationships," including his relationships with his Jedi masters.

Changing his name and turning into "Darth Vader" is a red flag of Skywalker's disturbed identity, note Schmitt and colleagues.

The researchers aren't suggesting that real people with borderline personality disorder are Darth Vaders-in-the-making. Skywalker's symptoms are an extreme, fictional case.

Borderline personality disorder can be treated through psychotherapy and with medication. But that wasn't part of Skywalker's script.

Windu mentions it in ep. I. He says something about discovering something in order to unravel the mystery of the Sith. I would have thought that they had some type of an idea of who and what they were. I mean Yoda is 800 years old and although he was born after the fall of the Sith Empire, you would think that there would be someone around during that time that would know or at least understand and be able to explain.
I've been practicing some myself, but I have no formal training, just what
I've gotten off the net and figured out for myself, so if you're a beginner
too that's great, we can figure out our own style. If you're not, you can
have a good time schooling me.
I'm looking to get together at least twice a month. I have saftey goggles so
no one will lose an eye, and nice shiny padded sabers are in the works. If
you're into it let me know!
Star Wars in the news... http://www.space.com/entertainment/ap_070316_starwars_mailbox.html

Thirty years ago, in theaters near and far, far away, a movie opened the imaginations of millions, combining the magic of mythology and special effects to launch the “Star Wars'' phenomenon.

A star of those films – the brave little robot R2-D2 – is about to take a turn collecting mail as the Postal Service and Lucasfilm Ltd. commemorate that movie launch [image].

The post office is wrapping mail collection boxes in some 200 cities nationwide in a special covering to look like R2-D2.

It's part of a promotion for a new stamp to be announced March 28, said Anita T. Bizzotto, the post office's chief marketing officer.

“It's a little teaser for the upcoming announcement and we decided to have a little fun with it,'' she said.

About 400 mailboxes will be covered to look like the stout droid. “When you look at a mailbox, the resemblance to R2-D2 is too good to pass up,'' Bizzotto said.

While postal officials would like people to look for these mailboxes and maybe even drop in a letter, Bizzotto urged people not to tamper with them, noting that's a crime.

Wookie Impersonator Arrested for Battery
By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A man dressed as Chewbacca was arrested after police said the street performer head-butted a tour guide operator in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Frederick Evan Young, 44, of Los Angeles was booked Thursday for investigation of misdemeanor battery, police Lt. Paul Vernon said.

Police said the 6-foot-4 street performer was seen arguing Thursday afternoon with a tour guide who had expressed concern the Star Wars wookie impersonator was "harassing and touching tourists" in violation of city law.

The city passed ordinances last year seeking to crack down on the colorful assortment of actors who perform outside the landmark theater. The move was prompted by complaints from tourists who said the actors were aggressive and abusive if they refused to pay for pictures.

Security guards escorted Young off theater property, but he decided to strike back and head-butted the tour guide, Vernon said.

"The lesson here is you can have the force with you," Vernon said. "You just can't use illegal force."

Young could not be reached for comment. His telephone number was unlisted.

The tour guide, Brian Sapir, told the Los Angeles Times that he asked the Chewbacca impersonator to stop harassing two young Japanese tourists when the actor exploded in anger.

"He said, 'Nobody tells this wookie what to do,'" Sapir said.

Because he lied to Luke, tried to suppress Luke's natural abilities, and drove him mercilessly with work and falsehoods; the worst of the latter was that if they kept their heads low the Empire wouldn't bother them. Owen's death at the hands of the Stormtroopers proved the lie of that one!

I didn't pick Jar-Jar Binks because in the end, Jar Jar proved his own necessity to the Star Wars saga--he was the Foolish True Believer. It was his proposal which led to the Senate endorsing Palpatine's policies and his ascension to the throne.

I like Padme in the new films. I still have a difficult time with how she died in the last movie though as I've posted a few times - I imagined her living longer b/c of Leia's memory of her. From the first movie she seems too strong of an individual to give up the will to live. IF she died of a broken heart in my opinion it would have made more sense of this happening to her over time when she saw who Anakin had become - not when her children were born.

Any on that can be engaged in a sword fight, can loose one, but Magic, that is dark, and mysterious, and way more ominous than just a blade. plus, why would he ever NEED a lightsaber? thats what VADER was for. for me, the Emperor should hold the jedi in disdain, why stoop to using a weapon, when you can unleash the full power of the dark side? Fighting with a blade implies some sort of honor, and the emperor has none.

I mean I knew she was going to die but I do not like the way it happened. It did not seem right. She was a strong and independent woman so to just give up the will to live does not seem like the truth about her to me. What do you think? I've heard from other Star Wars fans that Lucas choose her death at that time b/c her dying symbolized the birth of Vader? I imagined her living with her daughter until she was about four years old or so and then dying of depression or in some kind of battle? I remember in Return of the Jedi Leia talks about memories of her mother... Did Lucas mess up there? Please let me know what you think?

Count Dooku was an awesome foe in EP2, and I think he did us all a favor by making Anakin a lefty. The battles between Luke and Vader are awesome in both Empire and Jedi.
By far one of the most awesome things I've ever seen is the amazing climactic battle between Obi Wan and Vader in EP3. The choreaography and speed of that fight is savage poetry! And it leads into another fave of mine, when Vader is on the table being transformed into the hulking machine-man, only to learn it has all been for naught.

New here. Sorry if you already covered this.

Was Palpatine Anakin's father? Did he sneak down to Tatooine and use the dark side to seduce Shmi Skywalker, impregnate her, and then erase her memory of it? It would make perfect sense because he manipulated everything else into place, including killing Shmi Skywalker (by way of the Sand People).

And if so, then wouldn't that have made a better ending...for the Emporer to drop an "I am your father" on the newly helmeted Darth?

Don't know if Lucas thought of that. If he did, it would have been cool....

Has anyone found it humorous that in ep. IV there is a trooper that hits his head on the door when chasing Han and Chewie? This was originally a slip in the editing, but it was unfortunately un-cutable. What I mean is that the pace of that scene is just so that it would have been very noticeable had they cut it out.

So what did they do to remedy this little editing flaw? Why they did what all good story tellers do they improvised.

When they were filming ep. II they show Jango getting into "Slave 1" and hitting his head on the hatch door and they als ogave him a scare for it. You'll notice that the Clones, Boba and Jango all have a scare on their forheads.

All of this for a simple little thing that could not be cut out of an earlier episode.
